When we look at an Apple Watch or some other Wearable device, we see an object of lust, a cool gadget. When the internet looks at that smartwatch or fitness tracker on your wrist, it sees another endpoint — an extension of itself. The network delivers information to that endpoint in the form of beeps, buzzes, and notifications; but it also draws information from these devices and the bodies to which they are attached.

In early September, in a clapboard house situated on 43 acres just outside a small town in northern Vermont, two boys awaken. They are brothers; the older is 12, the younger 9, and they rise to a day that has barely emerged from the clutches of dark. It is not yet autumn, but already the air has begun to change, the soft nights of late summer lengthening and chilling into the season to come. Outside the boys’ bedroom window, the leaves on the maples are just starting to turn.

And if it continues on this trajectory, thousands of years from now geologists and archaeologists will be able to identify the bourbon-free era in the absence of fancy rectangular bottles in the remains of fallen civilizations.

Nothing else is urgent so you walk to the kitchen to get breakfast. You sit down with three fellow engineers who are also working on your product. During conversation over the course of breakfast, you discover that you and Phil are working on exactly the same problem, so you decide that Phil is going to take point and you two will chat once he’s done.

If you’re a late riser, there’s a good chance that you have, at one point, been made to feel inferior to the seeming moral superiority of your early riser friends and colleagues.
Unlike early birds (people who have a genetic tendency to go to bed and wake up early), late risers, also known as night owls, have a natural tendency to go to bed late and sleep even later. And that’s just fine. Although you may sleep through the early morning hours, which many early birds claim are their most productive of the day, for night owls these productive hours manifest themselves much later in the day.
