Reducing risks by taking risks

You have a hypothesis you wish to prove or refute regarding your behavior in an extreme scenario. For example: after restarting the DB, all services are fully functioning within X seconds. There are at least 3 approaches:

  1. Wait && See — if you wait long enough this scenario will probably happen by itself in production.
  2. Deep Learning — put the DBA, OPS and service owner in a big room, and ask them to analyze what will happen to the services after restarting the DB. They will need to go over network configuration, analyze the connection pool and DB settings, and so on.
  3. Just Do It — deliberately create this scenario within a controlled environment:

Timing — Bases on your knowledge pick the right quarter, month, week, day and hour – so the impact on the business will be minimal.

The Ford Transformation

The craftsmen hand-building cars at the Ford Motor Company’s Piquette Avenue assembly plant in the first decade of the 20th century were, among other things, impressively productive at their tasks.

Two or three workers would gather around each partially-assembled car, taking parts, checking their fit, adjusting them on a metal lathe as needed, then checking the fit again, and so on. To watch them work would be to watch experts practiced in their movements and efficient in their tool use.

Your human-size life

In the early years of this blog I wrote a lot about the personal struggles of people who had attained financial independence only to find out that it revealed that money was not what was standing in the way of happiness. That’s contrary to the message of our society, which is this:

  • Until you’re rich, you’re miserable.
  • Once you’re rich, it’s all great!

I was fascinated with this topic, because a few years earlier, when the company I founded went public, I had achieved this independence, and found that I wasn’t happy. I felt like I had done all that had been asked of me, and I was promised happiness, and I had been cheated, and wanted to understand why.

Backyard Makeover

When we bought our house in Denver, we intentionally got one that didn’t really need any work done on the house itself. That didn’t entirely work out (yay emergency bathroom remodeling!), but most of our attentions have been focused on our yard, and particularly our back yard. We wanted a “livable” space, that we could spend a bunch of time in and really enjoy. It’s fun to look back at where we started, and where we are now.
