On Failure and Organization Resilience

Like many people in ops-adjacent parts of the internet, I had a lot of feels around this reddit post, where a new software developer trying to follow instructions to set up his development environment accidentally borked the production database and was summarily fired as a result. Dr. Richard Cook of SNAFUCatchers wrote a piece in response looking at different ways that organizations can respond to failure. The reddit story is a pretty clear example of what Dr. Cook calls “blame and train”, but he notes that this is not the optimal reaction to failure as it tends to lead to organizational brittleness. More positive reactions to failure can lead instead towards organizational resilience, and Dr. Cook encouraged me to share a story of what that could look like.

In preparation for our 32-hour work weeks, I’ve been working with some folks on our team to help them more clearly define their roles. To achieve the same amount of work in less time, we have to make sure that we’re all working on the right things and that everyone is clear on their part in our combined success.

I’ve been using a process that we developed when Chris and I were trying to define our own roles. This really helps people in roles where the job is multi-faceted, like a Product Manager, a lead, etc. The end result we’re looking for is a clearly defined set of tasks and goals for each person on your team. Meaning, when hit a fork in the road, everyone knows which road to take because it was clearly defined ahead of time.

A company with a 100 CEOs can do anything.

Amazon appears to be a unique success when it comes to not just the success it has achieved but the diversity of businesses it has succeeded in — from online retail to web services, and the march continues into many, many new lines of business.

Almost every large, successful company struggles with growing beyond its core business. Oracle is great at selling software, Salesforce is great at cloud CRM, Apple is great at selling devices and they do an okay to good job of selling products and services that are complimentary — often through the exact same distribution channel.

What can you learn from 10 days without electricity?

At the time of writing, my electricity has just been switched back on after 10 days.

Thankfully, it wasn’t due to a lack of money or chronic apartment deficiency that we were out of juice for so long. It was simple mid-twenties idiocy — we forgot to pay the bill on time, and we paid the price (for all of you out there who are worrying about your adulting skills, don’t worry, I’m pretty sure I’m winning the “can’t function in the real world race” by at least a mile).

Most people have days they’ll never forget. For me, that day is April 26, 2011.

It was my first time appearing on National Public Radio. As part of the program All Things Considered, host Michele Norris interviewed me about my research that suggested increasing narcissism in pop music lyrics. Michele was curious, insightful, and put me at ease. When I left my office and walked to my car, I felt light as a feather floating across campus, free of care and worry. I had no idea that what would happen over the next 24 hours would upend everything in my life. That day would take me down a different path—one that included regularly running 100-mile footraces.

Fjällräven Classic, USA, 2017

This week, I’ve been roaming the Colorado wilderness with 250 of my closest/unknown friends, participating in the second annual Fjällräven Classic, USA. I participated in the inaugural event last year, which conveniently fell during my 3-month sabbatical from work. At the time, I said that no matter what else was going on, I would definitely be attending again in 2017. As promised, when the 2017 Classic was announced, I immediately grabbed tickets, and this time even talked Erika into going.

For my whole life, people have commented on my ability to get things done. I am a productive person, constantly tackling projects and tasks and using my time and my energy to produce results.

But there is dark for every light.

I have never been good at giving myself a break. I have always beat myself up for not being productive enough even though those that know and love me assure me that I am ahead of the curve.

When your team is tasked with generating ideas to solve a problem, suggesting a brainstorming session is a natural reaction. But does that approach actually work?

Although the term “brainstorming” is now used as a generic term for having groups develop ideas, it began as the name of a specific technique proposed by advertising executive Alex Osborn in the 1950s. He codified the basic rules that many of us follow when getting people together to generate ideas: Toss out as many ideas as possible. Don’t worry if they’re too crazy. Build on the ideas people generate. Don’t criticize initially.

Voice is the future and Google is best

Almost a year ago, I was lucky enough to be given an Amazon Echo from someone whose family wasn’t that comfortable with an always-on device listening to them, so he gave it to me to play with. My life is quite boring, listen away devices.

So my family likes the Echo, it works well enough – though our primary use case was as a kitchen timer and to play music. My kids also like the occasional joke but beyond that we didn’t really use it. We got trained by Alexa to not ask it to do too much – for example, we’d ask it to translate a word, or ask for the score of a game, and it wouldn’t have an answer.
