I was originally going to carve outlines only, but then realized I needed to shave the skin off to get things to light up properly, so had to keep going.

Robin opted for a more traditional one, with cut out eyes, mouth etc. She also added ears which were pretty fancy.

I decided to carve the guy from Pan’s Labyrinth who has his eyes in his hands. I drew something out first, then taped it to the pumpkin and went over the important lines poking a blade into the pumpkin so that I had something resembling a perforated line where I needed to carve things.

I had a typewriter just like this when I was a kid, and used it to type up a complete (short) novel. I don’t know what happened to it over the years, but I came across it again at the SF MoMA, as a fine example of industrial design. Robin tracked one down and got it for me!
